Artists background information Jean 'Binta' Breeze is a Jamaican-born 'dub' poet, who began to write poetry in the 1970s, performing and recording first in Kingston then in London. Jean Binta Breeze's work is rich and varied, ranging from childhood memories of Kingston market to the contemporary inner-city streets of London. Her work concentrates on the 'psychological' dimensions of black women's experience, as well as recording ordinary, everyday incidents and rituals with a warmth and humour. She is one of the most important, influential performance poets of recent years. Breeze is today recognised as the first woman to write and perform dub poetry and is a pioneering figure in what was traditionally regarded a very masculine genre, stretching the form in different directions § She has performed her work throughout the world, touring in the Caribbean, North America, Europe, South East Asia and Africa. She has published several poetry collections, and her latest book is The Fifth Figure (2006), a sequence mixing poetry and prose, which chronicles the lives of five generations of Caribbean and Black British women of mixed ancestry. Mark has been a performer since 1985, he has toured the UK and abroad, has made seven series of his own show for Channel 4, worked as a comic, an activist and a writer. He is renown for his ongoing campaign against the arms & torture trade, for which he pulls off numerous antics to expose the extent of the scandalous practises. He has a unique ability to make a very complicated subject accessible and funny. You will be educated, shocked and entertained. A pioneering DJ, Ritu has consistently been voted as the best DJ by industry magazines who are intrigued by her eclectic mix of house, garage, soul, swing, jungle, ragga, bhangra, and hindi. Ritu comfortably communicates to traditional Asian audiences as well as 'leftfield' non-Asians, often acting as an 'ambassador' for the music. Renowned for her professional approach Ritu is sought-after internationally and at home for her in-depth knowledge and is frequently consulted by journalists, TV researchers, and international record companies and promoters about the British Asian music scene. DJ Ritu has had residencies at a number of London venues, and has played at a stunning variety of clubs including the Astoria, the Ministry of Sound, Cafe de Paris, Jazz Café & Dingwalls, as well as further afield in Brighton and beyond. She has toured with Nitin Sawhney, Black Star Liner, and plays regularly alongside Talvin Singh, Joi, ADF, Earthtribe, Badmarsh, Fundamental, Transglobal Underground, Apache Indian, and JC 001.
