Growing up Global Conference 29.01.07

9.30 - Registration, tea and coffee.

10.00 – Marketplace – An opportunity for you to experience a selection of activities from the Growing up Global handbook, plus an opportunity to explore the books recommended in the handbook and other Early Years resources.

11.00 – Ghanaian Welcome Chant by children from Redlands School (TBC) and introduction to RISC.

11.15 –Setting the Scene: keynote speaker - Dr Stephen Scoffham is a Principal Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Canterbury Christ Church University.  He has been involved in Development Education for many years and is a long-serving member of the local development group (WEDG). The author of many key geography texts for primary schools, Stephen is currently the Honorary Publications Officer for the Geographical Association.  He edited the acclaimed revised version of the Primary Geography Handbook [and is now engaged on a school atlas scheme.]

Workshops – all four workshops will take place a.m. and p.m.

(1) “What do I say           now?”

Have you ever been left speechless by a child or a parent’s comment? An action packed session enabling you to respond appropriately to those racist, homophobic or sexist remarks and take the opportunity to challenge rather than reinforce stereotypes.

 

(2) “How do we know

        it’s working?”

You may know what you are doing works, but can you prove it? Develop your own toolkit of simple activities and ideas for gathering evidence of the effectiveness of global education.

 

(3)   Storytent

A trip around the world (under canvas). Explore the Global Kidz storytent a perfect environment for children to discover people, places, activities and stories from around the world.

(4)   Playtime

A cornucopia of music and games from around the world. A great fun way to develop children’s global awareness.

 

Please note £15 Booking fee includes a copy of the Growing up Global Handbook,
(worth £14.95), a buffet lunch and refreshments.

 

Participants are given the opportunity to purchase additional copies of the Growing up Global Handbook at a discounted rate on the day.

Getting here/Parking: Please use town centre car parks, the nearest and cheapest is Queens Road Car Park. See www.risc.org.uk/map/location.html

Lunch: A hot vegetarian lunch will be provided, please let us know when booking if you have any dietary requirements.

Abilities: The conference is situated on one level with wheelchair access to all facilities, if you are registered disabled and require a closer parking place please let us know when booking.
A hearing loop can be provided, please let us know when booking.
If you have any other needs, please let us know when booking and we will endeavour to meet your needs.
